Love!

To My Young Newlyweds

My heart’s poem to you woke me up this morning:
Sadder, a little more at peace,
Wanting desperately to love you two;
Though I have no right to think myself above you
In wisdom, virtue, beauty, or prayer, yet,
I want to fawn over you.
As if age alone gave me the right to think of you as my little brother and sister,
Or my grandchildren,
Or my pets! (forgive me!)
Two such humble, goofy, peaceful, normal people,
Loving each other like puppies or little neglected children:
Trusting in God to get you through.
And loving me, too!
It gives me hope in God's mercy that,
Though I am childish, awkward, anxious, lost, prideful, and sinful,
Still, I am loved in such a way.
